Biography

The German pianist Stephan Matthias Lademann is prominent amongst the new generation of piano accompanists. Particularly as Diana Damrau’s regular partner on stage he has made an international name for himself, and has accompanied the soprano all over the world with her Lieder evenings, performing at the Frankfurt Alten Oper, in the Vienna Musikverein, at the Schwarzenberg Schubertiade, at the Munich Opernfestspiele, in New York’s Carnegie Hall, at the Kissinger Summer, at the Ludwigsburg Schlossfestspiele, at the Salzburg Festspiele and at the Teatro alla Scala di Milano.
Born in Meissen, the pianist studied at the “Carl Maria von Weber” University of Music in Dresden and soon focussed on piano accompaniment. At the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Stuttgart he was to begin as the assistant of Kammersängerin Sylvia Geszty and attended numerous master classes of well known singers such as Birgit Nilsson, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Julia Hamari, Anna Reynolds and Thomas Quasthoff.
Concert tours to accompany Siegfried Jerusalem as well as successful singers of the younger generation such as Sibylla Rubens, Chen Reiss, Robert Dean Smith and Iván Paley took him to international festivals in Germany and Austria, as well as to many music centres in Europe, Asia and South and North America.
For the world premiere recording of the cycle of Mahler's "Des Knaben Wunderhorn” in its original piano version with Diana Damrau and Iván Paley with telos music vocal, Stephan Matthias Lademann received the “Toblacher Komponierhäuschen 2004” special prize.  Further CD recordings of Mahler’s “Das Lied von der Erde” appeared for the same label with Robert Dean Smith and Iván Paley in the tenor, baritone and piano version as well as a CD with works by Robert and Clara Schumann under the title “Songs and Letters” with Damrau, Paley and the actors Martina Gedeck and Sebastian Koch. In these productions, which received great attention from the public and press, Lademann’s stylish accompaniment was praised as much as the Orfeo live recording of the Lieder evening with Diana Damrau at the Salzburg Festspiele in 2005. Amongst his most recent publications are a recording with PhilArtists of Italian songs by Schubert and Donizetti, where he accompanied the Israeli soprano Chen Reiss.
Alongside his extensive concert activities, Stephan Matthias Lademann teaches at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna as well as at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Nuremberg.
